Fleet Case Study: Murphy Corporation
Background of the Client
Murphy Company, based in Denver, is one of the nation’s leading mechanical contracting firms. The company specializes in mechanical and industrial construction, offering services such as HVAC, plumbing, process piping, and piping fabrication. Murphy Company has been involved in significant projects throughout Colorado, including work for major clients like Denver International Airport and MillerCoors. The division we worked with specifically focuses on commercial HVAC and electrical services. Their fleet primarily consists of older F350 cargo vans, which are used by their technicians for service calls and daily operations. Prior to engaging with us, their focus on driver safety training was limited, and they were seeking ways to improve the confidence and skills of their drivers.
Client Needs and Challenges
Murphy Corporation faced challenges in ensuring the safety and confidence of their younger, newer HVAC technicians who were tasked with driving large, heavy vehicles, like the F350 cargo vans. Although these technicians hadn’t had any serious incidents, the company saw a need to proactively address driving skills, particularly for maneuvering large vans in tight spaces and understanding the unique handling challenges these vehicles present. Their main concern was ensuring that their newer drivers, who had little experience with larger vehicles, could operate them safely and confidently to avoid liability and safety concerns for both their employees and their assets.
Our Approach and Solutions
After assessing Murphy Corporation’s needs, DriveSafe Fleet Program customized a fleet safety training session focusing on precision driving to improve skill and confidence in driving larger fleet vehicles. The session was conducted in one of their older F350 cargo vans, a standard vehicle for their fleet.
Key areas of focus included:
- Turn radius and blind spots unique to large, panel vans
- Proper scanning techniques, following distance, and space maintenance
- Adjusting for road conditions and managing the top-heavy nature of these vehicles
- Perpendicular and parallel parking and backing into tight spaces
Implementation and Process
We came to Murphy Corporation’s team at their convenience and location, accommodating both their fleet and work environment to ensure the training would be effective, smooth, and relevant to their operations. Our instructor worked closely with their technician, using both hands-on driving exercises and a whiteboard discussion to cover various techniques and challenges of driving large fleet vehicles. The lesson included practical driving drills in tight spaces to simulate the real-world environments where their technicians would need to park and maneuver the van.
The implementation of the training went smoothly, with students expressing satisfaction and new found comfort with the skillsets. A team member from Murphy Corporation, attended the post-training evaluation and was enthusiastic about the feedback and potential for broader application of our services.
Impact
By addressing the challenges faced by younger HVAC technicians, the program could support Murphy’s long-term fleet safety goals to improve workplace safety and reduce risk and liability across the fleet.
