What to Expect on Colorado Driver's License Test
The Colorado driver license test, and test route, is set forth by the state. The state driving test evaluates over 100 items that measure your skill and knowledge of legal and safe driving practices. The drive test covers practical driving skills and abilities and is designed to ensure individuals understand how to drive motor vehicles safely.
If you take a reputable drivers ed course or practice with a skilled supervisor, your instructor should do a good job preparing you for what the state driving test will involve. Don’t be afraid to ask your driving instructor to clarify anything before your test begins.
The skills measured on the drive test will be an assessment of all three of the following categories:
Perceptual:
The ability to perceive characteristics of the many highway traffic environments in a way that permits the safe operation of motor vehicles, e.g. judging gaps or identifying hazards.
Motor:
The ability to manipulate controls in order to maneuver the vehicle, e.g. ability to rotate the steering wheel in relation to the motion of the vehicle and intended path when turning a corner.
Attentional:
The ability to focus and shift attention, e.g. to monitor traffic ahead and the side in a merge.
Your drive test score will be based on how well you perform the following maneuvers:
Left and right turns
Stopping at intersections
Through intersections
Lane changes in traffic
General driving behavior
Merging into and leaving traffic
Additionally, these specific maneuvers are graded factors associated with the drive test performance requirements:
Lane selection, Lane management, Use of Turn Signals, Speed Control, Stopping, Acceleration, Searching/Scanning, General Driving Behavior: Steering, braking, acceleration, searching, lane usage, and obeying all traffic laws, signs and signals.

How Hard Is It to Pass the Colorado Drivers License Test?
With diligent studying of the Colorado Driver Handbook on laws and regulations of driving, paired with ample behind-the-wheel training, many drivers succeed in passing their drivers’ license test on their first attempt.
However, it’s not uncommon for even seasoned drivers to overlook certain standards; and fail their first time. Oftentimes students will succeed their second time taking the test once they learn what led to their failure on the first try. The good news is you can retake the test as many times as you need to; it’s not a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
Our experienced and encouraging driving instructors understand that the driving test can be an intimidating experience, so they work hard to provide a supportive and calm environment where students can fully focus on the road ahead of them.
AFTER YOUR DRIVER'S LICENSE TEST
When students conclude their drive tests, our driving instructors provide valuable feedback on areas of improvement to help them on their mission to become licensed drivers. Whether a student passes or fails, we do everything we can to make his/her time with us a positive learning experience that encourages smart and safe decisions behind the wheel.

Colorado Permit Test
Before testing to obtain your driver’s license, Colorado requires individuals under 21 years old to hold a valid permit first. In order to be issued a permit you need to successfully pass the Driving Knowledge (Written) Test.
In addition to our drivers ed courses that prepare students for the written permit test, we are also state-certified to offer the permit test at all our DriveSafe locations.
By skipping the stress of the CO DMV and taking the written exam in a familiar, friendly environment, students are able to focus more thoroughly on the questions in front of them.
