How Many Hours of Behind-the-Wheel Training Do I Need?
If you are under the age of 16 ½ you will need to complete 6 Hours of behind-the-wheel training with a state-certified driving instructor in order to be eligible to take your driver’s license test. If you are older than 16 ½, there is no state behind-the-wheel training requirement.
HOW MANY BEHIND-THE-WHEEL HOURS WITH A PARENT DO I NEED AFTER MY PERMIT TEST?
After your written permit test, if you are under the age of 18 you’ll need to log 50 hours of driving time (at least 10 hours at night) with a legal guardian, to meet the driving log requirements while holding your instruction permit for a full year. We recommend doubling those hours to ensure you’ve had enough practice to develop safe driving habits and increase your chances of successfully passing your license test.

About Our Longmont Behind-the-Wheel Programs
Teen drivers under 16 ½ are required to complete 6 Hours of Behind-the-Wheel training with a state-certified driving instructor in order to be eligible to take the driver’s license test. Lessons are broken up into three 2-hour sessions. We recommend the “6 in 6” approach in which students space out their lessons across the first 6 months of having their permit after they pass their written permit test. This way, after each lesson, students can delegate time in between sessions to practice the skills they just learned, focus on areas of improvement, and continuously build upon their abilities. How Much Does It Cost to Go to Driving School in Longmont?
The state mandates different drivers education requirements depending on your age. The amount of classroom education and drivers’ training your age group requires, will determine the cost. This range is because many students bundle their course requirements with a written permit test, behind-the-wheel training, defensive skills courses for insurance discounts, and their driver license test.

Driving lessons vary in cost because every student’s learning journey differs. Many students require professional instruction and additional practice to fully develop their confidence and safety habits behind the wheel. For others, meeting their minimal training requirements, taking online courses, and practicing with a legal guardian on their own drive time is enough. Wherever you fall on the spectrum, you are worth the time and investment it takes to achieve your driving goals, whichever driving school program you deem the right fit for you.
